With passion for life: family allotment gardens

Passion Piece - Allotment Gardens

Summer is certainly not a season which encourages us to work hard, on the contrary, it’s an ideal time for relax and having some rest in the circle of family and friends. How to spend your leisure time in the city? Poles have found a perfect solution – the family allotment gardens (rodzinne ogrody działkowe/ROD), which are nothing more than a defined area intended to grow fruit, vegetables and other plants or just to have rest in the fresh air.

Last week I had a chance to visit such a place, as I don’t have my own plot, which I could use freely during my free time. The family allotment gardens ‘Jutrzenka’ are situated in Mysłowice. They are a complex of well-maintained plots, you can’t really take your eyes off.

Having a closer look at the history of this place, I got to know that after the Second World War, exactly in 1945, the first Society for Family Gardens was reactivated. Its main role was to develop the plots. One of the allotment gardens complex set up in that particular time was ‘Jutrzenka’.

What distinguishes this place from others? The owners of the allotment gardens have adapted the plots with big heart and passion for what they’re doing. All the gardens are beautifully maintained, and the attention to details makes the visitors’ heads spinning. I’ve never suspected that on such small pieces of land one could create such magical spots. Despite being situated in the city, which is located in one of the most industrial parts of Poland, the allotment gardens ‘Jutrzenka’ allow its visitors to feel like on holidays, thanks to their lush greenery and forests surrounding the complex.

I also got to know that the owners of the allotment gardens are eager to take part in various kinds of contests, that’s why they try to create unique and unusual places, which could certainly be appreciated by the jury responsible for choosing the winners in this kind of contests. I was truly surprised by the resourcefulness of the plot owners, who besides planting beautiful, colourful and sweet-smelling flowers or fruit trees, decided to add some extra features such as summer houses resembling mountain cabins, windmills, garden statues or other practical equipments used for leisure time activities.

What can young people do there? There are really lots of possibilities! From sunbathing and reading books to spending time actively in the company of family and friends playing board games or grilling.

Making use of the good weather, I’m coming back to my umbrella drinks … I wish you wonderful holidays!

See you around!

Yours,

Passion Piece

That is SO cool!!!! We could really use something like that here in Brooklyn, though I'm sure it would cost a pretty penny. Still, it'd be nice to have our own space to grow a garden and have a BBQ!!
